Help Wanted: Moms Raising Daughters
Readers
From a first time mother
As I began reading this book I couldn't help but think that these were some of the exact same thoughts that were going through my mind once I had my daughter! The author begins the book by telling her readers how shocked and afraid she was to learn of her pregnancy and then to actually become a mother.. and I am glad that she has put her feelings down on paper because as a first time mother I found it to be a very scary experience especially since everyone around me was only willing to talk about how exciting it is to become a mother and no one wanted to talk about the challenges and changes that I would face, the sacrifices that I would have to make and the constant fear that I would have to live with (I wake up with cold sweats sometimes just thinking about all the horrible things that can happen to my child!). As I continued to read the book I could not help but think: at last someone who truly understands the meaning of parenthood! I found comfort in this book knowing that there are many others who must feel the same way I do. by luvtoread (from Amazon.com review)
Really is Helpful!
Help Wanted: Moms Raising Daughters by Darlene Brock is a wonderful book. Although my daughters are grown already I thought I would read this book because my daughter now has a young daughter of her own and I know that raising a child in this day and age is vastly different then when I raised my three children. I found Darlene's book very insightful and I appreciated the fact that she has the courage to say what needs to be said regarding raising your children and maintain your position of authority as a parent. I think that any person (mother, father, grandfather, grandmother, aunt, uncle, etc.) who has a child in their life would greatly benefit from this book especially since Darlene Brock is speaking from real life experience. by SavPat (from Amazon.com review)
Relatable
Help Wanted is a very "user-friendly" book in my opinion, and I think this comes from the fact that the author has not only used her own personal real-life experiences as examples in the book but has also injected a healthy dose of humor. And trust me as the mother of a 3 year old, very active little boy, humor is key! I found her book to be forthright and direct in her approach as well as her "advise" to other mothers. It is easy to become overwhelmed by all of the "resources and literature" out there for parents these days but I found this book to be completely relatable and a welcome "time-out" for mommy by kasrana (from Amazon.com review)
Not just for Mom's
As a father I have read parenting books geared towards fathers but I thought that I would try out a book that was intended for moms. It was a great idea! Not to say that I now know what mothers feel and go through but it definitely offers insight from the other "point of view". I found the information in this book to be helpful for fathers as well as mothers. By Milsp (from Amazon.com review)

Great Research Material!
Not quite a mom yet but I would like to be someday and so I thought I would read this book as "research" if you will. I found the authors personal stories very interesting and definitely some food for thought before I consider entering the arena of parenthood! It is definitely an eye opening book and a good book to read before having children because the author's personal experiences will shed light on what you can expect as a parent. I enjoyed this book and I will be keeping it around to reference! by RKP (from Amazon.com review)
Loved "Help Wanted"...after having 4 boys it was a challenge to know what to do with a girl!! My daughter is 10 now, and will benefit from the additional information what I have gleaned from reading this book. I am also helping the older 3 teenage boys learn to be coaches for her as well! Her younger 6 year old brother will have the benefit of learning by example at an earlier age and someday they will all be able to guide their daughters with crucial insight.

Offers great guidelines
"Help Wanted" serves to enlighten, encourage and empower moms of daughters...and sons! I loved this book, and found it helpful and insightful in the many roles that we moms play in helping our children be successful and happy in life. This book gives great guidelines to help you onto a path of a job well done.

Her writing style is fun and light. It doesn’t feel like a “how to” lecture on nurturing children at a women’s conference or a doctoral thesis on the psychology of teenage girls. It is more like having a conversation with a good friend. She mixes all the great qualities of a heart to heart conversation with your best friend: experience, wisdom, encouragement, and solid examples of how to put the idea in motion.

I really enjoyed this book! My favorite part was all of the stories Darlene shares about her mothering journey with her two daughters. Darlene shares not as a "know it all expert" ~ but as a woman who has sought to be the very best mom she can be, and learned many lessons along the way. By the end of the book, I felt as if I had just shared coffee with Darlene, and was now ready to try some of her new tips and techniques at home! :)

I came away with some very practical things to use in our relationship, but I was also encouraged just by reading some of the stories. Sometimes a parenting book will make a mom feel totally incompetent, but this does not do that at all, it actually made me feel empowered. This is a book I will refer to often in the next few years, I can guarantee that. Highly recommended.

Help Wanted approaches motherhood as a series of job descriptions. Covering various aspects of education, identity, and management, each chapter begins with a job title and description, and then discusses in detail how such a job fits into the life of a mother. The stories she chose to share, whether from her own life and the lives of her family and acquaintances or from the lives of historical figures, are entertaining, inspiring, and at times downright hilarious. And they all successfully and powerfully drive home each of her points.
